Obituary: Herbert “Bud” Winslow, Jr.

Herbert “Bud” Winslow, Jr., 85, of Locust Valley died on Oct 19, 2014 surrounded by his family. Loving husband of the late Nancy. Devoted father of Nancy (Peter) Dyer, Tracey Taylor, Thomas (Kim) Winslow and Susan (Michael) Parente. Proud grandfather to Torre, Haydon, Adam, Nicholas, Christian and Jordan. Brother to William Winslow

He was a dedicated veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp., and attended Springfield College on the GI Bill. He taught physical education at Seaford Manor School where he was famous for his “Gym Nights.” He enjoyed coaching football, basketball and his true passion, lacrosse. His presence as a lifeguard on the local North Shore beaches that began as a summer job lasted 68 years and included becoming one of the first North Shore Aquatics Coordinators for the Town of Oyster Bay earning him the endearment of “The Chief,” a job that he reluctantly retired from only last year.

He was a member of the LV Fire Dept., LV Republican Club, Red Cross Water Safety Instructors Assoc., LI Lacrosse Officials Assoc. and the Mill River Rod & Gun Club as well as a life long volunteer of the Grenville Baker Boys’ and Girls’ Club. Bud has touched the lives of so many and always found the best in people.

Family received friends at Whitting Funeral Home, 300 Glen Cove Ave, Glen Head, www.whitting.com. Funeral services held at LV Reformed Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bud Winslow Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Grenville Baker Boys’ and Girls’ Club, 135 Forest Ave., Locust Valley, NY 11560.
