Nassau County Police are investigating a home invasion, which occurred this Halloween in Farmingdale.
According to detectives, a 34-year-old mother was at home with her husband and two-year-old son when she opened the door, expecting “trick or treaters.”
Instead, three adult subjects, all wearing masks to cover their faces, waited on the doorstep.
Second Precinct Inspector John Berry said that in this particular instance, the suspects played into the Halloween theme.
“Things might have gone differently had it been a regular night,” Berry said.
Police said the subjects, two of whom were armed with handguns, forced the door open and entered the home. After demanding the homeowners sit down, the husband, who refused to comply, was struck several times in the head with the butt of a pistol. Both victims were then bound at the hands and feet with duct tape, while two additional subjects joined the group as they began to ransack the home.
The female victim, who was able to free herself, grabbed her son and ran next door to call 911, police said. All five subjects then fled the house in an unknown direction. The husband, 48, was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
According to Berry, the best prevention from a home invasion is not to open the door until checking to see who it is. “If you are unsure, tell the police,” he added.
Police said the amount taken from the house could not be determined as of press time.
The suspects are described as a black male wearing a white mask and dark clothes, a black male reportedly wearing a werewolf mask and armed with a handgun, a black female with an afro and goggles, a white male armed with a handgun and a black male wearing a wool hat and a mask.
