A student at Dutch Lane Elementary School recently earned first place in her division in the New York Association for Pupil Transportation bus safety poster contest.
Natalie Borrientos placed first in Division 1, where children in kindergarten through second-grade participated in the statewide contest. The theme of the 2014 bus safety poster contest was “Be smart — Be seen, I wait in a safe place!” Borrientos’ poster has also been submitted to the National Association for Pupil Transportation for judging at the national level.
On Nov. 3, Borrientos, with her parents and two younger sisters in attendance, received a NYAPT certificate for the accomplishment and a $100 prize. Principal Susan Strauss and art teacher Diana Germinario presented the Borrientos family with the honor during a special morning ceremony.
“We are so very proud of Natalie for creating such a beautiful poster with a wonderful message,” Strauss said. “It’s great that Diana learned of the contest and encouraged our children to participate. That’s what we do here at Dutch Lane; we collaborate, and then we celebrate.”
