The fall athletic season seemed to move quickly, but all teams had outstanding seasons with all teams reaching the playoffs except for two who had their best season in many years.
In addition to athletic acheivements, all of the varsity programs at Hicksville High School also participated in raising more than $4,000 for several charities this past fall: pediatric cancer, breast cancer awareness and cystic fibrosis.
The Boys Varsity Soccer team finished a solid season. The team finished 11-5-1 and competed for a conference title. While several key injuries hampered the late season run, the team continued working hard and demonstrated growth, both as athletes and as people. The team has 15 graduating seniors this year. The team reached the post season tournament and unfortunately lost in the second round.
The Lady Comet Soccer team played in the County Finals against Massapequa (the two-time defending county champion) on Nov. 4. Despite the fact that the Chiefs came away with the victory, the Lady Comets walked off the field feeling like champions. With a conference record of 2-6-4, the Lady Comets finished the season hot and including the playoffs they were 5-0-3 going into the championship game. The Hicksville girls overcame many injuries throughout the season, some of which were season ending, but the team hung together and fought their way all the way to the finals.
This season the Varsity Boys Cross Country team had 28 students complete the season and receive varsity credit. Although there were no post season honors achieved, each of the athletes improved their performance in the regular-season meets. Several of the underclassmen ran in the 19 to 20 minute range for the 5K which was a great improvement from the 23 to 24 minute range at which they started. Morale remained high throughout the season and athletes participated in all of the meets.
This year the Varsity Girls Cross Country team had two runners Kaitlyn Space and Sam Schultheiss compete in the state qualifier meet on Nov 2. They were two of the 12 chosen individually for this event. Both ran a great race despite the bad weather conditions. The team also beat Plainview JFK for the first time in 20 years. The team finished the season with 24 runners. It was a great season for all.
The Girls Tennis team had an extremely competitive season. Winning five matches with tiebreakers and third sets in almost every match, the girls put up a strong fight. This year’s team is graduating four seniors. Two seniors reach the post season tournament.
This year the Girls Swim team had an outstanding season. The team finished the season in second place in the conference, winning five out of the six conference meets of the season. The Conference title came down to the last meet. Junior, Sarah Crespo qualified for County Preliminaries in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle events. Also, all three of the A Team relays went to County Preliminaries. At County Preliminaries, Crespo came in the top 20 for both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle events, which qualified her to swim at County Finals. At County Finals Crespo placed in the top 20 in Nassau County for both events and swam her best times of the season. The 400 freestyle relay which included, senior Kaitlyn Stockstad, senior Hunter Isnardi, freshman Gabriela Nisculescu and junior Sarah Crespo, came in 22nd which qualified the relay to go to County Finals as an alternate. This is the first time in many years Hicksville has had a relay team qualify for County Finals.
The Football team finished the season with a 3-5 record. This was not at all indicative of the season that they had. For the first time in years the team was competitive in every game. The team battled all year and wound up finishing 10th of 14 teams in the division. One win away from an 8th seed and the playoffs. The program maintained its numbers throughout the season and finished with over 75 students between Varsity and JV. The current seniors have started the legacy of hard work and determination and as a program we hope to sustain this into next year.
Varsity Girls Volleyball finished in first place in Conference AAII with a record of 11–1 Conference Champions. Our conference only receives three All-County awards and two Hicksville players were voted on by the other coaches in the conference to receive All-County awards. The program is looking forward to next season.
The Boys Varsity Volleyball team had an improved and successful 2014 season. After a 4-10 campaign in the 2013 season the team improved to an 8-8 record in 2014. Led by middle hitter Abdullah Khalid, outside hitter Paul Drago, and setter Joseph Barnett, the team got stronger and more experienced as the season progressed and won many tightly contested matches. The future is looking bright as all of the players currently on the varsity team will be returning for the 2015 season and will continue to build on the success of the past season.
