Levittown Basketball Preview

International tourney to kick off new season

The MacArthur varsity boys basketball team tips off its 2014-15 season on Thursday, Dec. 4, by hosting the annual Jeff Shaw Memorial Basketball Tournament.

The Generals face an international opponent in their opener, with a game against Hjemly Sports Boarding School of Ringe, Denmark, at 7:15 p.m.

Division faces Massapequa in the tournament’s other opening-round game, at 5:30 p.m. at MacArthur.

The tournament is held in memory of Jeff Shaw, an electrician from Levittown and avid supporter of local basketball, who was working at Cantor Fitzgerald, on the 105th floor of the north tower, on Sept. 11.

The tournament’s consolation game will be held Friday, Dec. 5, at 4:30 p.m. The championship game will be 6:15 p.m. that day.

In what is becoming an annual tradition, the visiting Danish students will spend a couple of nights living with MacArthur basketball players and their families. They also will attend classes with the host student-athletes.

This season, the senior-laden Generals switch leagues, moving to Conference AA-III, which includes Calhoun, Elmont, Herricks, Long Beach, Mepham and Westbury. During the season’s opening month, MacArthur also has 6:15 p.m. home games on Dec. 12, 19 and 23.

MacArthur’s seniors include forwards Greg Baumstein, Phil Carucci and Greg Schacter and guards Ryan Cunningham, Dean Peluso, Brian Perez and Jack Wall. Baumstein and Peluso are coming off a fall season in which they won MacArthur’s first-ever boys soccer county championship.
