This summer, East Hills natives Scott Reich and Mike Winik started up an online food market, OurHarvest. The purpose was to follow a business model where customers would visit the company’s website, select a convenient pickup location and date, and then pick up their order on the designated date. For every order of $25 or more, OurHarvest donates a meal to a local food pantry or food bank to help combat hunger on Long Island, including Island Harvest and Long Island Cares.
Business has been so good that the two have opened yet another new location in Roslyn to keep pace with its rapid growth.
OurHarvest will now do business at the Equinox Fitness Club, 90 Northern Blvd. The move to the fitness club represents the company’s 11th location since it began operations in July.
“The response we’ve already received from the Roslyn community has been tremendous,” said Reich. “So we’re very excited to expand here. Customers regularly tell us that they’ve never tasted fresh, top-quality food at such fair prices.
“Growing our partnership with Equinox is a natural fit for us,” added Winik. “Their members are health-conscious individuals who want access to the products we offer. We’ve already had success together in Equinox’s Woodbury location, so we think this new location will really take off.”
For its innovative way of doing business, OurHarvest has received recognition outside of Roslyn. Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano honored the company for its innovative business model and for its extensive work supporting local food pantries and food banks. OurHarvest was also featured on FiOS’s television program Money & Main$treet. Reich and Winik plan to open several additional locations both on Long Island and in New York City in the coming months.
Both Reich and Winik, as noted, grew up in East Hills, attended Wheatley High School and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania together, where they were roommates. They regularly talked about going into business and always wanted to start a company that had strong societal value.
Prior to co-founding OurHarvest, Reich practiced law at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP and authored the acclaimed book, The Power of Citizenship: Why JFK Matters to a New Generation. Winik worked at Evercore Partners where, in addition to advising some of the world’s largest companies, he ran the firm’s analyst recruiting and internship program.
