After seven years of planning and preparation, Jefferson Plaza—a $59 million transit-oriented development project, across from the Long Island Railroad station in Farmingdale—officially opened the first of two mixed-use retail/residential apartment buildings in the village.
Farmingdale Mayor Ralph Ekstrand said that over the holiday break, he presented three couples with a certificate of occupancy, while simultaneously welcoming the first tenants into their new home at 148 S. Front St.
“It’s just heartwarming to see this [project] come to fruition and to actually see people come in and occupy it,” Ekstrand said. “As it fills up, it’s going to be a real boost in the arm to downtown Farmingdale.”
More than a year since the groundbreaking, the first phase of Jefferson Plaza is now complete, while construction to the west side of Secatogue Ave. continues, with the second
building slated to open later this year.
Despite a few minor hiccups with the excavation of the property, the newly opened facility features 39 rental apartments and approximately 6,000 square feet of retail space. Between the two buildings, Jefferson Plaza will share a total 19,400 sq. ft of retail space with 154 luxury apartments above.
Housing will also provide amenities strictly for residents including three courtyards, barbecues, two clubhouses, a fitness center, a business lounge, a theater/media room and on-site management.
Rent costs anywhere from $2,585 to $3,475, with an additional 16 units reserved for “workforce housing” at a significantly reduced price.
