Roslyn School District Superintendent Dr. Dan Brenner will retire at the end of the school year to take the same position in the Darien Public Schools in Connecticut, he announced on the school district website. He’s expected to be appointed on Jan. 27. Brenner, who has been in Roslyn since 2009, is expected to tender his resignation on Feb.5.
“I am sad to say that I will be retiring,” he said. ” I know I will be leaving a school community that I admire and respect, and I will do so knowing we have accomplished more than I could have ever imagined.”
Allison Brown, current superintendent for curriculum and instruction will be promoted to deputy superintendent effective July 1 before her elevation to Brenner’s old spot in July 2016. The district tapped former superintendent Gerry Dempsey to serve as interim superintendent for the next year to help Brown transition. He served as interim superintendent in 2006-07. Joe Dragone will continue as assistant superintendent for business.
“Ms. Brown is an outstanding educator who is known to our community first as the East Hills principal and currently as the assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction,” said Brenner. “I believe she will be a great superintendent.”
Citing his commute to Roslyn, Brenner said the move will shorten his travel.
“The ride, where I often spend over 90 minutes in the car each way, has finally gotten the best of me,” he said. “The commute to Darien will cut my ride in half while presenting me the exciting opportunity to work in a school district that honors education much like ours in Roslyn, something that is very important to me.”
The Roslyn School District Board of Education said in a statement that they are “gratified by all we accomplished in collaboration with [Brenner] and through his dynamic, visionary leadership.”
