One of the Roslyn School District’s technology objectives is to make all young learners into coders, part of a nationwide effort to raise the next generation of scientists and engineers. Like the students in Ms. Murphy’s computer lab at East Hills, Roslyn’s elementary students are applying problem-solving skills to unravel coding puzzles, learning to recognize patterns, getting familiar with basic programming concepts such as loops and conditional statements, and writing small programs.
These students are using Blockly, a visual programming language, to work through self-guided tutorials. While building excitement about the many ways technology enhances our lives, we are also supporting Common Core and Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) standards through coding activities.
