Temple Sinai of Roslyn will host an official opening for a photo and text exhibit, Anne Frank: A History For Today Teaching Tolerance Through Evocative Imagery and Text, one chronicling one of the 20th centuries most iconic and tragic stories on Friday, Feb. 6.
The exhibit will be held at Temple Sinai through Friday, Feb. 13. The Feb. 6 event will be held following Shabbat services. According to Temple Sinai officials, Anne Frank: A History For Today is a specially designed and created traveling exhibit that will educate visitors of all ages about the dangerous consequences of intolerance, to all communities.
For the duration of the exhibit, Temple Sinai sixth and seventh grade students, those who have been trained by the educators from the Anne Frank Center USA, will act as docents for the exhibit and lead tours during Religious School hours.
The Anne Frank Center USA is providing the materials the mobile exhibit, which itself is sponsored by Jonathan and Stacey Rothschild.
The Diary of a Young Girl, the famous journal authored by the teenage native of The Netherlands during World War II is one of the world’s most famous books, selling up to 30 million copies and being translated into 67 languages. The manuscript, which was held by Frank’s father, Otto, covers the time period from June 1942 to August 1944, while the Frank family lived in hiding from the German gestapo. It was first published in Holland in 1947 and translated into English in 1952.
A play based on the book won the Pulitzer Prize for 1955. Later, a 1959 movie version earned Shelley Winters an Academy award for her portrayal of Anne Frank. But mostly, the diary has captured the world’s imagination for decades for its courage, perseverance, wisdom and humor written under the most excruciating of circumstances.
