“Exercise With Joy” Low Impact Exercise

Start your day with low impact exercise. Joy Cody has created a program with the senior and beginner population in mind. Classes will take place on Thursdays at 9 a.m. in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall. The 60-minute class will run for 10 weeks at a cost of $50. This program is open to any resident of the Incorporated Village of Garden City. Classes began Feb. 5.

Mardi Gras Luncheon

The Mardi Gras Luncheon for seniors will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 17 from noon to 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall. Seniors aged 65 or older who are residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City are invited to attend. The cost will be $5 and reservations are necessary. To make a reservation, please visit the recreation and parks office at 108 Rockaway Ave. by Monday, Feb. 16. Payment must accompany registration.

Adult Art Class At Cluett Hall

The Garden City’s Department of Recreation and Parks will offer an adult art class this winter. This 10-week program will teach the beginner as well as the advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still-life in pastel from photographs.

Classes will be held Tuesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The cost of this program will be $110. This class is open to adult residents who reside in the Incorporated Village of Garden City. Classes are held in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall beginning Feb. 17.

The first lesson includes a portrait and landscape demonstration. At that time, a supply list is provided. Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student will receive the individual attention required as they move at their own pace and level of expertise.

Arleen Rueth Urban, the instructor for this program, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her portraits hang in many Garden City homes, as well as throughout the United States. A portrait of Elvis Presley permanently hangs in Graceland, and Barbara Walters is among her celebrity commissioned subjects.  

This year, Rueth Urban has added some basic drawing techniques to her pastel workshop. Those wishing to draw with pencil and/or charcoal only are invited to join this class.

St. Paul’s Senior Center Hours

St. Paul’s Senior Center is open and again running programs for seniors to enjoy. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, for senior individuals to either participate in the programs offered or to just sit, relax and enjoy the setting. The weekly schedule will be as follows:

Mondays

10 a.m. Exercise with Felicia in Cluett Hall

11:15 a.m. Bingo

Wednesdays

9:15 a.m. Exercise with Felicia

10:30 a.m. Exercise with Felicia

11:30 a.m. Brown bag lunch day

Bring your lunch and join the rest of the group to discuss topics of the day

Fridays

9 a.m. Exercise with Felicia, including stretching to music in chairs

10:15 a.m. Exercise with Felicia

11:15 a.m. Resistance exercise with bands

Registration For Upcoming Senior Trips

The recreation department, with the advisement of the senior advisory committee, is sponsoring the following trips for seniors who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City during the upcoming months. Please remember to register early because all trips are first come, first served. No registrations will be taken before they are announced in the paper and payment must accompany any registration,

Tour Of Harlem

On Wednesday, March 4, the recreation department will be taking a group by coach bus into New York City, where they will meet a local guide who will show them the highlights of Harlem. Sights through this interesting neighborhood will include St. John the Divine, the Apollo Theatre, and lunch at the famous Sylvia’s. The price of the trip will be $85, payable to Rendezvous Travel. Payment must accompany registrations. Space is limited so please register early, Please note, the recreation department will now allow guests on this trip. However, a nonresident guest will have to pay the full price of $98 for this trip.

Greenwood Cemetary/Brooklyn Naval Yard Tour

This trip, which takes place on Wednesday, June 3, will involve traveling by coach bus into Brooklyn, where attendees will get a private tram tour of Greenwood Cemetery and its history. The group will then go to Junior’s Restaurant for lunch. After lunch, everyone will head to the Brooklyn Naval Yard for a narrated tour. The price of this trip will be $80, with a $50 deposit, checks only made payable to Rendezvous Travel, due at this time. Space is limited.

Culinary Institute/FDR’s Hyde Park Home Excursion

For this Wednesday, June 16 outing, the group will travel by coach bus to the Culinary Institute, where attendees will have a tour and lunch at the Caterina d’Medici Restaurant. Everyone will then travel and tour FDR’s home and museum. Please be aware that there will be a lot of walking on this trip. The price of the trip will be $85, with a $50 deposit, checks only made payable to Rendezvous Travel, due at this time. Space is limited.

North Fork Wine Tasting Tour

On Wednesday, Sept. 30, attendees will travel by coach bus to the Claudio’s in Greenport, where they will enjoy a delicious lunch. The group will then tour some of the vineyards of the North Fork and enjoy wine tasting. There will also be a stop at Brieremere Farm, known for its produce and baked goods. The price of the trip will be $75, with a $50 deposit, checks only made payable to Rendezvous Travel, due at this time. Space is limited.

More trips will be added soon. Please note, once the fees are sent to the venues, they are not refundable so make your selections carefully. All trips are open to senior residents of the Inc.
