The Geraldine J. Baker Memorial Scholarship for Breast Cancer Research, coordinated through the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer (MWCABC), provides an exciting opportunity for a rising junior to spend part of this summer working beside world-renowned researchers at a state-of-the-art facility examining aspects of breast cancer research. This year’s winner will intern at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research at North Shore-LIJ Health Systems. The scholarship was established in memory of Gerri Baker, an educator and long-time Manhasset resident who lost her courageous fight against breast cancer in 2008, to encourage interest in breast cancer research among high school students.
This unique four-week summer scholarship is designed for a mature, highly motivated, independent minded rising junior with proven interest, academic strength and laboratory experience in biology and chemistry. The Scholarship competition is open to current high school sophomores living in Manhasset regardless of which school they attend but all applicants must have the endorsement of their science research advisor. Students can obtain additional information by sending an email to the MWCABC c/o Arda Haratunian at saharatun@aol.com. Completed applications, including letters of recommendation, are due March 12.
