On Jan. 22, at the St. Anthony’s Indoor Track Complex, the Oyster Bay Boys’ Varsity Winter Track Team won the Section 8 Conference 6 Championship Meet for the first time in school history.
Oyster Bay was battling Wheatley for the lead for most of the night, setting up a very dramatic conclusion to the meet. With only four events remaining, the boys’ team eventually pulled ahead after Jack Sherbal won the triple jump with a distance of 39 ft., 1 inch, and the 4 x 800 meter relay team comprised of Matt Palczewski, Dylan Mavros, Steven Sweet and Jason Cassella rallied to win their race. These two victories earned the team 20 crucial points. Coupled with a fourth place finish by the team’s 4 x 400 meter relay team and a fifth place finish by the team’s 4 x 200 meter relay team, the team’s point total increased to 94 and ensured them the championship.
Many individual honors were earned over the course of the evening. Conference champions include Alex Tosi in the 3200 meter run, Christopher Canadeo in the shot put and Sherbal in the triple jump and the 4 x 800 meter relay team.
All-Conference honors were earned by Jason Cassella in the 3200, Tosi in the 1600 and 1000 meter runs, Paul Vomvas in the 600 meter run and Sherbal in the 55 hurdles and the long jump.
At the Section 8 Conference 6 Girl’s Championship Meet, the Lady Baymen earned many impressive individual honors. All-Conference honors were netted by Laura Angelone for finishing second in the 3000 meter run, by Cailleen O’Keefe for finishing second in the 55 meter dash and Rachel Wesley for placing second in the 600 meter run.
