Luciana Resence of Pennsylvania Avenue has been an excellent emergency room nurse at Winthrop University Hospital for 10 years. Luciana also works as a crossing guard for the Garden City Police Department where she has served for 12 years. She and her husband have two children.

Eric Gregorious of Maple Place is now the manager of Robert’s Mens Shop. He has been with the company for 15 years. Robert’s recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, making it the oldest store on Jericho Turnpike between Mineola Boulevard and Willis Avenue.

The day of the Super Bowl football game was also the day of the annual Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast, with pancakes donated and cooked by IHOP of Williston Park and the sausages donated by Manny Carvalho of Churrasquiera Bairrada restaurant. Attending the pancake breakfast were many dignitaries and residents of Mineola including Mayor Strauss; Trustees Cusato, Walsh, Durham and Periera; Senator Martins; and County Legislator Rich Nicollello and his wife Susan. Susan’s dad was a judge for many years.

Also attending were Bob and Sally Mitchell, with their daughters Katie and Wendy and a few of their seven grandchildren; Roberto and Diana Broegg and their children Jack and Samantha;and Joe and Kim Galante with kids Riley and Ashlyn. Joe’s mom, of course, was Mineola mayor Ann Galante.

Michael and Jennifer Reddy also attended the breakfast with their son Sean and twin daughters Erin and Kiera, their grandmother Peggy May and cousins Charlie and Kensie Goldberg who were there with their dad Tom. Their mom Krissy was on a business trip to Japan. Rick and Joanne Ueland, Joe Pratt and his family, Gary Mazur, Bill Grisalfi and the Mineola Junior Fire Department also attended, along with a dedicated group of runners led by Judge Scott Fairgrieve. Village Associate Justice Jackie Carway and John Carway were hard at work.

The other Kiwanis volunteers at the breakfast included Steve Parmett from Minuteman Press, which donates all of the printed material for this event and many other community events, Robbin Valentine who runs the Valentine insurance and real estate office, and Luisa Filipe, who serves as the current Lieutenant Governor of the Long Island North Division of Kiwanis International.

Other Kiwanis members volunteering for the breakfast included Maddie Maffetore, Joao Silva, Ed Schacter, Janet Woehlers and Kathy Coghlan. Key Club students from Carle Place, Mineola and Wheatley served the guests. The event is co-chaired by Russ Burcheri, Paul May and Joel Harris who was there with Helene Harris, the current Kiwanis Mineola president.
Editor’s Note: Lou Sanders, who has his journalism degree from NYU, and his wife, Grace, a graduate of Adelphi University, founded the Mineola American in 1952, giving the village its first successful newspaper. Lou and Grace have lived in Mineola for 59 years and his popular column is a signature feature of this paper.
