Spring series begins with a talk
on TR and the Great War
This spring, the Friends of Sagamore Hill will sponsor the 11th Annual Dr. John A. Gable Lecture Series, honoring Gable’s legacy as longtime director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association and tireless advocate for both Theodore Roosevelt and his enduring presence on the American scene.
The series opens on Thursday, March 12, with Rick Marschall, a lifelong Roosevelt scholar who takes up the topic of Theodore Roosevelt and the Great War.
According to Marschall, “TR almost single-handedly turned American public opinion from anti-war to pro-intervention. He was more persuasive than events, even the sinking of the Lusitania. He pulled the GOP to his point of view, then the general public. Whether because of the war—or the sheer force of his personality—he was the closest the United States has had to a Shadow President, the opposition leader if we had a parliamentary system.”
A former political cartoonist, Marschall writes extensively on politics, history and cartoons, while maintaining the nation’s largest private collection of cartoon and comic art, popular and graphic-satire magazines, newspaper funnies, political cartoons, and original art.
The lecture begins at 7 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall, at 60 East Main St. in Oyster Bay. Admission and refreshments are free to all. Donations to the Friends of Sagamore Hill are greatly appreciated. For more information, visit www.sagamore-hill.com/lecture.html or call 516-922-5032.
