Golf Hearing On The Horizon

The public hearing on the Wheatley Hills Golf Club 18-bedroom addition, which was canceled on March 5 due to a snowstorm, has been rescheduled for March 31 at 8 p.m. in Village Hall at 2 Prospect Place in East Williston.

The revised plan, which was submitted to the village board in December, currently has an estimated cost of $250,000.

The previous plan, which was presented last month to the village zoning board, was to extend the building slightly over 3,000 sq. ft., and was estimated to cost nearly $500,000, with renovations totaling $100,000. Presented by Kevin Walsh, attorney for Wheatley Golf Course with the firm Walsh Markus McDougal & DeBellis, LLP, the building, which extends from the main building towards East Willis Avenue, will remain the same and have a revised number of bedrooms and storage space.

The plan calls for additional common areas, kitchens and bathroom along with outside vestibules on the northern edges of the proposed building.

“Even though we’re looking to have 18 rooms, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll have them all filled,” Wheatley Hills President Anthony Cardillo said recently. “It’s to provide flexibility.”

Housing at the club, which opened in 1913 at 147 East Williston Ave. however, is not unprecedented.

“There have been renovations and additions a number of times over the years,” Village Building Inspector Bob Campagna said at a recent zoning board meeting. “In the main club on the east side, there was a general manager’s apartment that was built way back in the ’40s.”
