Levittown’s Salk Middle School students celebrated the various cultures and traditions of 17 English as a Second Language (ESL) students, who displayed information about their country’s food, sports and traditions during International Day.
Under the direction of teachers Marie Capizzano and Linora Ortega, the ESL students developed presentations that asked an essential question: How is my culture portrayed through food, nature, sports, traditions, music and dance?
“Some of these students have lived in this country for only a few months, and it is a wonderful opportunity for them to share their heritage with peers,” said Ortega.
Presentations in the school library included information about China, Turkey, Honduras, El Salvador, Pakistan and more. The students also dressed in native costume as they shared with fellow students facts about their countries. Students from the language classes were encouraged to sing songs, and Spanish learners played a game of Memory, but a Spanish vocabulary version.
Prior to International Day, teachers presented their classes with a PowerPoint of their own heritage. Many of the students also participated in a schoolwide travel poster contest.
