Exactly half of the six 2015 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Goalie of the Week awards thus far are firmly in the hands of Plattsburgh State junior Matt Massaria. The league office made the announcement on Monday, April 6.
In search of just their second win ever against St. Lawrence on April 1, the Cardinals turned to the goalie, Massaria of Floral Park to step up in net and the junior didn’t back away from the challenge. He played all 60 minutes and made 12 stops as the Cardinals scored an 11-7 win over their North Country rivals. It marked the second straight time Plattburgh State has downed the Saints.
On Saturday, April 4, Massaria and the Cardinals returned home to the Field House Lacrosse Complex for the first time since March 11, and proceeded to put a big hurting on SUNY Geneseo. In the 57 minutes he spent stationed in the Cardinals’ goal mouth, Massaria made 13 saves and allowed just six goals in Plattsburgh State’s 16-6 win over the Knights.
Massaria’s save percentage of .636 ranks second in the SUNYAC and is a big reason why the Cardinals are off to their best start in program history. Plattsburgh State is 9-3 which includes a 2-0 mark in the SUNYAC. Additionally, the Cardinals are receiving votes in the latest USILA Division III Coaches Poll. Massaria is a Floral Park Memorial High School graduate.
