SCOPE Manhasset Summer Center Director Steps Down

Elaine Schaefer, after more than 20 years of involvement, including the last seven as director of SCOPE Manhasset Summer Center, has announced her retirement from
the program.
Summer Center had been a part of the Manhasset summer program for a number of years before it transitioned to SCOPE.
The original program was run under the Citizens Advisory Committee for Summer Center and was funded by the school district. In 2004, at the height of austerity, it had been taken out of the budget and made self-supporting. The Manhasset Summer Center program has been in existence for nearly 70 years.
Schaefer said: “I have enjoyed working at ‘Summer Center’ for over 20 years and will miss the challenge, excitement and camaraderie that I have enjoyed for so long. However, it is time to continue my journey in a new direction.”
Schaefer spoke highly of the staff, volunteers and students that made her years at Summer Center gratifying ones, as well as the joy of watching both educators and students develop ideas for classroom activities to spark everyone’s imagination. She wishes the next director of Summer Center much success.
The Summer Center program is designed specifically for children entering kindergarten through sixth grade who live in the Manhasset school district. The three-hour morning program includes arts and crafts and exciting programs tailored to each grade. The groups are divided up into two segments: kindergarten through second grade and third grade through sixth grade. There is a fee for the program.
