Shichtman To Be Honored

The League of Women Voters (LWV) of Port Washington-Manhasset will honor Dr. Debbie Shichtman on Sunday, May 31 at 5:30 p.m. the Swan Club in Roslyn. LWV_051315A
Over the past 46 years Shichtman has served as President of the LWV of Great Neck, Copresident of the LWV of Nassau County, on the Board of the LWV of New York State and currently Shichtman is on the Board of the LWV of Port Washington-Manhasset. In addition, she has devoted her energies to support gifted and disadvantaged children.
Among her LWV responsibilities, Shichtman moderated candidate forums, edited the LWV of Nassau County Voter’s Guide, and chaired studies on charter schools, alternate energy and water on Long Island. She worked with the Board of Elections on a new voting machine project and frequently coordinated and monitored the Town of North Hempstead Housing Authority Tenants Election.
Currently a resident at the Amsterdam at Harborside in Port Washington, Shichtman continues her fight for the environment. She recently headed a protest, which resulted in preventing the construction of a garbage facility adjacent to the protected marshland in Hempstead Harbor. Shichtman also coordinated a petition in support of a Water Compact on Long Island. Shichtman was on the Amsterdam Election Committee, is currently on the Amsterdam Public Affairs Committee and soon will become a member of the Amsterdam Resident’s Council.
Shichtman earned her B.A. from Barnard, MSW from Columbia University School of Social Work and Ed.D. from Columbia University Teachers College. She was secretary of the Great Neck/Manhasset Community Child Care Partnership and was a member of the National Society of Gifted and Talented Children. Shichtman helped institute programs for gifted children in Nassau and Suffolk schools.
The LWV of Nassau County honored her for her years of public service and in 2003 The Town of North Hempstead placed her on their Women’s Roll of Honor.
