Young Stars To Teach Basics

Garden City High School alums set to coach lacrosse camp at St. Paul’s

With the summer rapidly approaching, FLG Lacrosse will once again have a star-studded line up of recent Garden City graduates committed to working the annual FLG Lacrosse Summer Camp as counselors this year. Among the players working the event are Jackie Jahelka (Adelphi University), Thomas Wright (Penn State), James Sullivan (Harvard), Matt Borges (Ohio State), Jack Tigh (Yale) and Stephen Jahelka (Harvard). The Garden City natives will team up with other counselors from colleges across the country to teach campers skills they have learned, both on and off the field, throughout their high school and college careers. Other colleges that have been represented by counselors, both boys and girls, at the camp have been Duke, UNC, Virginia, UPenn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, LIU Post and many others.

FLG Lacrosse Camp is a one-week lacrosse camp that provides a positive and creative environment in which players can fine-tune their lacrosse skills. Using unique and original drills from the FLG Methodology Playbook, players work on all areas of their game to make them as dynamic as possible. Camper are also exposed to lessons in trust and leadership that show the importance of being a good teammate in addition to being a good player in some off-field exercises. Finally, campers play other games, such as mini-lacrosse, kickball and lacrosse football to cross train so that they can work on all of their athletic talents, not just lacrosse-specific ones.

In addition to the on the field curriculum, the camp is split into teams with campers competing throughout the week to earn points for their team. At the end of each day, counselors recap the team’s performance and announce the FLG Lacrosse Camper of the Day for the most deserving camper. However, despite their only being one Camper of the Day awarded each day, campers can still look forward to their end of the day surprise, as they collect some new FLG gear each day to go home with. Camper photos are also available.

For the first time, the FLG Camp will take place at St. Paul’s in Garden City (228 Stewart Ave.). It’s a chance to learn from the best talent Garden City and Long Island has to offer. The camp starts Monday, June 29 and runs through Thursday, July 2. Parents can find our more information and register their child online at. www.flglacrosse.com/flg-camp/.
