Leisure Club Has Banner Year

Leisure_080515AThe closing months of the 2014-15 Mineola Leisure Club year offered members a plethora of activities and programs. There were special holiday celebrations, an out-of-state trip, visits from town dignitaries and two entertainment spectaculars. A focus on fun also made weekly meetings enjoyable.

Typically, club members had the opportunity to play bingo or participate in a 50/50 drawing. A monthly book club meeting was held where in depth discussions and ideas were exchanged.

Business meetings followed their usual agendas which included the observance of member birthdays and wedding anniversaries. These celebrants were entered into a raffle pool and the winners received a $10 gift card. Members were apprised of a special luncheon for senior recognition day where worthy citizens of the Town of North Hempstead were honored. At this event, longtime club member Mary Creegan was an honoree. On another occasion town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth made a surprise visit to the club with other town officials who circulated through the community center as they spoke to club members.

Leisure_080515CFor Mother’s Day, Mike Coniglio, leisure club president, hosted a pizza party and presented each mom with a lovely begonia plant. Two weeks later the officers of the club invited everyone to share in its 40th anniversary celebration. It was an afternoon of music with Gerard Corbett at the electronic keyboard, fun, games and a luncheon catered by Piccola Bussola.

Mayor Scott Strauss came to address the group and offered his best wishes for continued success.
Club members were treated to two wonderful shows at the community center. The astonishing participants of the New York Senior America contest put on a fabulous show that proved to all that age is only a number.

Tap dancers, even a belly dancer and singers of every music genre kept the seniors rapt. Another unforgettable performance took place when the Aloha dancers took to the stage at the center. The beautiful music and Hawaiian dances encouraged some of the seniors to learn the graceful movements that tell the traditional native stories.

Leisure_080515BA trip to Bethlehem, PA, also took place during June. The Sands Casino offered a terrific package for $30. This not only paid for the transportation, but included a $30 return in slots play and a $5 food voucher. The math adds up to a win at the onset and there were some happy winners.

Westbury Manor was the venue for the June end of year luncheon. Music by Mr. Ratto enticed the seniors to dance between courses. Plentiful and delicious food was par for the course and club members appreciated the lovely afternoon. It was a delightful way to end the club year.
