Rockville Centre Woman Convicted of Fatal DWI Crash

A Rockville Centre woman was convicted Wednesday of driving drunk and causing the crash that killed her 21-year-old best friend two years ago.

A Nassau County jury found Asya Ulmer, 23, of Rockville Centre, guilty of second-degree manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.

“There are no winners in a case like this,” Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said. “It is tragic that Asya Ulmer got drunk, drove, crashed and killed her best friend that night.”

Prosecutors said Ulmer was driving on North Centre Avenue with Jennifer Alexis in the car when she drove directly into a tractor trailer that was parked on the right shoulder at 5:50 a.m. on Sept. 15, 2013.

Alexis was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two were on their way home after taking the Long Island Rail Road to New York City, where they went clubbing before taking the train back.

Ulmer faces up to 15 years in prison. The case is due back in court on Sept. 15 for post-trial motions. A sentencing date has not been scheduled yet.
