The musical scores of some of Hollywood’s biggest box office hits took center stage at Syosset’s summer school musical program on Aug. 5.
Syosset students attending the district’s summer music academy at H.B. Thompson Middle School rehearsed for six weeks as an ensemble of mixed skill levels before performing in front of peers, teachers and family members in the school’s auditorium.
The orchestra, under the direction of teacher Amy Rostholder, played “Edelweiss,” from the musical The Sound of Music, as well as Darth Vader’s entrance score “The Imperial March” from the Star Wars films.
The band, directed by teacher Jeffrey Biener, opened with the theme song to blockbuster film Jurassic Park and closed out their performance with Ricky Martin’s “Livin La Vida Loca,” which was featured prominently in the children’s film Shrek 2.
The ensembles comprised of students from grades five through 10, some of whom have only been playing their instrument for one year. Adding to the mirth of the showcase, summer school principal Christopher Meyers dusted off his tenor saxophone and joined the band for their performance.
