Last year’s Shabbat was a well attended event.

Shabbat Under the Stars, a traditional Friday evening service accompanied by singing, music and a barbecue will be held in the parking lot of Temple Or Elohim on Tobie Lane in Jericho Friday, Sept. 4, at 7:30 p.m. The barbecue begins at 6 p.m.

This is the eighth year that the annual event is taking place. Cantor David Katz, who organized the temple’s May concert comprising popular Broadway show songs, will sing at the event, accompanied by the temple band, Nishamah. The band, consisting of guitars, a trumpet and drums, will play songs from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.

Cantor Katz said that the Shabbat event features a complete barbecue with chicken, burgers, hot dogs, many side dishes and beverages. The event is open to the entire community as well as to temple members.

“In this way,” Katz said, “we take advantage of an opportunity to introduce our temple and its services to as wide an audience as possible.”

Advance admission for the dinner is $5 for temple members and $10 for non-members. The fee for on-site admission is $10 for both members and non-members. There is no charge for youngsters under 13. Advance registration may be made by calling 516-433-9888 ext. 14, contacting the temple by email at office@templeorelohim.com or reserving in person at the temple at 18 Tobie Lane.

The event is part of an ongoing effort by the temple to develop the facility “as a center for the entire north shore, providing cultural activities that all members of the community can enjoy, whether or not they’re temple members,” said Katz.

The service, conducted by Rabbi Harvey Abramowitz and Katz, will take place in the parking lot, against the backdrop of the temple’s unique stained glass windows.

Temple publicity chair Laurel Fried said that last year’s Shabbat Under the Stars attracted more than 400 visitors, with attendees coming from all over.

“This event along with our May concert are becoming known as enjoyable and special annual go-to events,” she said.
