The Syosset, Jericho and Woodbury area was well represented in a recent Oyster Bay triathlon.
Aaron Lewis of Jericho was the first local finisher in the 28th annual Runner’s Edge-Town of Oyster Bay Triathlon, held in Oyster Bay and surrounding hamlets on Aug. 30.
Lewis completed the ½ mile swim in Oyster Bay harbor, 15 kilometer bike ride through Oyster Bay Cove and Laurel Hollow and 5 kilometer run to the Planting Fields and back to the finish at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay in 1 hour, 2 minutes, 10 seconds, good for 26th place overall and third plpace in the 20-24 age group. He left the swim in 154th place, but subsequently made up lots of ground in the bike and run segments of the triathlon.
Other local award winners included Matt Baruch of Woodbury (33rd overall, first in 45-49), Glen Mailings of Syosset (44th overall, 55-59), Angelo D’Errico of Syosset (61st overall, third in 25-29), Joseph Caracchio of Syosset (2nd Master, Clydesdale Weight Division), Samantha De Stefani of Syosset (first woman, 19 and under), Jacob Gidich of Syosset (fifth 30-34), Maria Smit of Syosset (first woman 35-39), Holly Jonas of Woodbury (second woman 60-64), Tim Healy of Syosset (second 60-64), Steve Jonas of Woodbury (third 60-64), Steven Weinstein of Woodbury (third 65-69), John Mulvey of Syosset (fourth 70-74) and Steve Schloss of Muttontown (first 75-79).
On hand to lend their support to the athletes were Nassau County legislators Rose Marie Walker and Don MacKenzie, Councilman Tony Macagnone, Town Clerk Jim Altadonna, Assemblyman Michael Montesano and District Court Judge Paul Meli.
The main charitable beneficiary of the 2015 Runner’s Edge Town of Oyster Bay Triathlon is the Life Enrichment Center at Oyster Bay. Other portions of the proceeds go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the fight against blood cancers and the Gerald Kaufman Memorial Fund dedicated to providing assistance to Long Island runners and multisport athletes in times of sudden financial need. The year’s event was once again dedicated to Gerald’s memory.
