Motorists are advised that road repair and repaving operations will begin Monday, October 19, 2015 during off-peak, daytime and nighttime hours on NY Route 25A/North Hempstead Turnpike between Glen Cove Road in Greenvale and NY Route 106 in East Norwich in the Towns of Oyster Bay and North Hempstead, Nassau County. Weather permitting, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, travel lanes will be shifted or closed when needed. A single eastbound and westbound travel lane will remain open. Where the roadway is too narrow to accommodate two lanes, an alternating one way traffic pattern will be utilized. Intermittent brief closures of all lanes may also be utilized to accommodate positioning of construction equipment. To minimize the impact on motorists, residents and businesses, road work will be limited to smaller segments of this 5.5 mile, NY Route 25A road improvement project.
These closures are needed to resurface this damaged section of NY Route 25A and are part of the $13.9 million NYS Department of Transportation project to repair widespread damage caused by deep frost last winter. During these off-peak daytime hours, the deteriorated pavement is being repaired and catch basins are being cleaned and repaired to improve roadway run off. Mill and fill repaving work will take place at night once the pavement repairs and drainage work are completed, which is anticipated to be Thursday, October 22, 2015. Travel lane shifts and closures will then take place between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday in order to remove the top layer of the distressed pavement then replace it with new asphalt and fresh pavement markings. When completed, this resurfacing project will improve motorists’ safety and help maintain the integrity of NY Route 25A.
Motorists are being warned in advance of the construction work via road signs and should use alternate routes or they will experience travel delays. Drivers who must use this construction route are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew. As with most road work, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather. Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these construction operations.
