Flushing greats from the 1969 and 1986 championship teams in Ed Kranepool and Dwight Gooden. The two were revving up the crowd during the gathering.

Kranepool, a Met from 1962, played 18 years for New York.
“New York has the greatest fans in the world and they’ve supported the Mets since I’ve started in 1962,” Kranepool. “Let’s make it three [championships].”
Mets fans have endured more than just a decade of waiting. Some have seen multiple championships, while others are praying to see their first.
John Kouril, formerly of Mineola who resides in Garden City Park, has been a Mets fan since their inception in 1962.
When the Mets topped the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series, memories of the great runs in ’69 and ’86 when the Mets captured the crown, and the roaring the days of Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, came rushing back to Kouril.
“When Brooklyn was here, it was great,” Kouril said. “When they left it was terrible. This [Mets team] is the best team I’ve seen in years.”
Selina Perez, 14, of Elmont, wasn’t alive when the 2000 Mets took on and lost to the Yankees in the World Series. She called this moment “a dream come true.”
“I hope they win,” she said. “It would be great.”
Tom Hickey a World War II veteran and Leila Zayas, who served in the military from 1978-1982 were picked to attend the World Series’ game three as part of the Mets’ Welcome Back Veteran’s Program. Veterans, including Hickey and Zayas, will hold a 350-foot American flag on the diamond.
“They’ll get to stay and watch the game,” Steven Castleton, a law enforcement and military liaison said.
Former Mineola mayor and current State Senator Jack Martins, empathized with the crowd of orange and blue.
“As a longstanding, long-suffering Met fan, how great is this?” Senator Jack Martins said.
Mets starter Matt Harvey will toe the mound tonight while the Royals will trot out Edison Volquez.
“We wish the entire team good luck in the series,” Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said.
