On Monday, Jan. 25, in the aftermath of snowstorm Jonas, when most schools and businesses on Long Island were closed and digging out of the two-plus feet of snow, Madeline Singas was sworn in as Nassau County District Attorney.

Madeline Singas was sworn-in by Chief Judge of the State of New York Janet DiFiore with husband, Theo Apostolou, by her side.

The official swearing in was performed by New York State Court of Appeals Chief Judge Janet DiFiore at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. The ceremony was held in the late afternoon with a full array of participants and performers.

Flanked by her husband, Theo Apostolou, and close family, friends and supporters, Singas pledged to fight government corruption. The Manhasset resident became acting district attorney after Kathleen Rice was sworn into Congress last January.

Singas had won a hard-fought battle against Republican opponent Kate Murray, former Town of Hempstead supervisor, on Nov. 4, 2015. In a highly publicized campaign, Singas fought to win with considerable aplomb, running on her record of being an outstanding prosecutor who had successfully put away criminals, including some for white collar, government and public corruption.

At the inauguration ceremony she commented, “I stand here because of what I know, not who I know.”

In attendance was United States Senator Charles Schumer who said, “Today is a great day for Madeline Singas because she got here the old-fashioned way; she earned it.”

New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman was also in attendance and said of Singas, “You have elected a leader who seeks to do justice at a time when people are really hungry for justice.”
