At last week’s meeting, the Roslyn Board of Education approved the bid works for renovation at the Roslyn Middle School, the East Hills Elementary School and the school district’s bus facility.
Erik Kaeyer, vice president at KG&D Architects was on hand to give a presentation about the upcoming bond work which is set to begin in late March.
“In December, we decided to bundle these projects together and in January went out for the bidding process,” said Kaeyer. “We wanted to try and keep the cost of the projects significantly under budget and went with the four lowest bidders who are good, qualified bidders.”
The companies that were awarded the bids for the bond work based on meeting a satisfactorily low cost include W.J Northridge Construction for the general construction contract and Relle Electric Corporation for the electrical construction contract. The total cost figure for the construction contract was $5,196,250 and the total cost for the electrical contract was $928,629 including alternate bids.
The plumbing contract was awarded to WHM Plumbing & Heating Contractors at a total recommended award of $350,344 and the HVAC contract was awarded to Central Air Corporation based out of Roslyn Heights at a total recommended award of $1,109,000.
East Hills Elementary School is set to receive corridor and classroom upgrades including new floors, ceilings and lighting. The main entrance to the school will have a new canopy, lobby vestibule and security office. New paving and sidewalks are also planned along with energy saving and infrastructure upgrades. Alternative bids at the school also looked at irrigation work and sodding for the new athletic fields.
Work at the Middle School will address the ongoing problem with storm water drainage issues such as excess water on the roof of the school and in the courtyard area. Congestion in the central stairwells will also be addressed as well as new lighting in the school cafeteria and new bleachers in the gym.
Upgrades to the district’s bus facility which will be relocated from Roslyn High School to Harbor Hill School will include additional drainage work at the site and maintenance work on oil tanks at the site. Some of the featured elements at the facility include four vehicle work bays, a driver training room, secure office area, secure parts storage and driver and mechanic worker restrooms.
Kaeyer said that the bond projects at the High School, Harbor Hill and the Heights School will be discussed within the next few weeks.
The next board meeting will be held on Thursday, March 10 at Roslyn High School.
