The Late Movie: Miss You Already
The Central Avenue library children’s room will show a 6:30 p.m. screening of the movie Miss You Already. This comedy-drama chronicles the relationship of lifelong best friends, Jess (Drew Barrymore) and Milly (Toni Collette). Complications arise when Jess, who has been living a free-spirited existence, decides she wants a baby and begins to envy the life of Milly, a career woman with a family. In rapid succession, Milly is diagnosed with cancer and must battle for her life while Jess discovers she’s finally pregnant. These life-changing events cause the friendship to be tested as they attempt to deal with the joy and sorrow in their lives. Starring Paddy Considine, Dominic Cooper and Jacqueline Bisset. Summer Reading Program Volunteers Needed
Applications for the Plainedge Library’s summer reading program are now available in the children’s department for Plainedge School District students entering grades 6 and up. No previous volunteer experience necessary. Community service credit furnished upon request. In order to effectively schedule volunteers in time for the summer, all applications need to be submitted to a children’s librarian by Friday, May 13, the latest, no exceptions. Heart of Plainedge 5K Run/Walk and Fun Run
The Plainedge community is invited to participate in a 5K run/walk and fun run at 9 a.m. to benefit the Plainedge Scholarship fund and health and wellness of the Plainedge community. There will be water on the course and refreshments at the finish line. A T-shirt will be given to all participants. The 5K race registration fee is $25 or $30 for day of registration. The fun run fee is $5, will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is for children only. All runners/walkers must check in between 7:30 and 8:45 a.m. at Plainedge High School. Adopt-A-Battalion Soldier’s Drive
Come help put care packages together for troops overseas. Looking for personal care items, seasonings and hot sauces and items other than candy. From 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Island Knight of Columbus Council, 2 Eastgate Rd., Massapequa Park.
Currency Appraisal Fair
The Currency Club will have an appraisal fair from 1 to 3:30 p.m. They will display Long Island National Bank notes, fractional currency, military payment certificates and anything federal back to 1776. Every Monday from 3:30 to 5 p.m., teens get to take over the auditorium. Massapequa Park Garden Club Meeting
Propagation, the art of growing your own plants, will be the topic of the meeting of the Massapequa Park Garden Club. The public is invited to watch horticulturist Gary Fischer demonstrate and explain this useful gardening skill. Massapequa Talks
YES Community Counseling Center and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition are hosting a town hall meeting, Massapequa Talks, sponsored by SAMHSA about the heroin epidemic. A listening panel of local government officials and community leaders as well as the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce, the 7th Precinct and the Massapequa School District, will be taking note of the serious issues that community members present. Afterwards there will be plans made of how to proactively address the core concerns. Brian Moore Memorial
New York City Police Department Detective First-Grade Brian Moore, who died in the line of duty on May 4, 2015, while serving the residents of New York City, will have a special dedication ceremony held in his memory at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Plainedge Park on Saturday, May 21 at 1 p.m. The event will include a statue unveiling and building dedication.
