South Floral Park’s 26th Annual Armed Forces Day

ArmedForces_052016The Incorporated Village of South Floral Park will host a celebration honoring members of the Unites States Armed Forces on Saturday, May 21. The ceremony will start at 11 a.m. in front of the village hall/fire house building at 383 Roquette Ave. in South Floral Park. A celebration of Armed Forces Day is rare and the village would like to keep its long-time tradition of proudly acknowledging those who sacrifice their lives for our freedom.

The event will feature powerful speeches by the village mayor, Honorable Geoffrey N. Prime, and also community leaders and veterans including Keynote Speaker Army Veteran Sylinthia Burges, founder of Women in the Military Inc. and active contributor for Veterans Affairs in Nassau County and the PFC Dwyer/Vet2vet Programs. Other guests attending are representatives of the American Legion, 1st Marine Corps District, Marine Veterans of Long Island, and state and local elected officials. Military members, past and present, will also be honored in the ceremony. South Floral Park village officials, South Floral Park Civic Association members and the South Floral Park Volunteer Fire Department will also be present among all the residents and invited guests.

Longtime resident Sandra Morilus will be returning to sing the national anthem and the Sewanhaka High School band will be playing a selection of patriotic songs. Additionally, the Invocation and Benediction will be made by local leaders of the United Methodist Church. After the placing of the wreath by Yvonne Kennedy and William Garnett and completion of the ceremony, this family-friendly event will offer refreshments and raffles in the fire house and an excellent opportunity to meet and greet and network with neighbors, guests and speakers.

Everyone is encouraged to attend and pay homage to past, current and fallen soldiers.
