Port residents came out to honor veterans and those who gave their lives for our country on Memorial Day. Though the forecast for Memorial Day was predicted to be horrible, Port Washington was one of the few towns on Long Island that didn’t cancel its Memorial Day Parade. Though it was rainy early, the weather cleared up and not a drop of rain fell on the spectators and marchers.
At this year’s Memorial Day Parade in Port, two grand marshals were honored. Jerald H. Tedeschi was the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) grand marshal. Leon Jankowski was the grand marshal from the American Legion.
The Memorial Day Parade began at 10 a.m. on Port Washington Boulevard and Campus Drive and ended on Lower Main Street near Sunset Park.
The Schreiber High School marching band, cheerleaders and Portettes, as well as many scout troops, Knights of Columbus, law enforcement, firefighters, veterans and various other Port Washington organizations, all put on a wonderful display for Memorial Day. A multitude of fire trucks and police vehicles ended the parade in grand style.
