Like a snowball racing downhill, local opposition by both politicians and residents to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s resurrected Mainline Third Track Project has been fast and furious. Letters to editors sent to local media have been flowing in at a furious clip, it’s been a hot topic at board of trustees meetings in various villages and Albany has undoubtedly been the recipient of numerous snail mail and email missives decrying this massive billion dollar undertaking. With Cuomo claiming that a big part of the reason this is necessary is because of reverse commuting congestion of workers coming from New York City to Long Island, the push back has been significant. So much so, that a group of mayors from a number of communities that would be directly affected by the Third Track proposal (Garden City, Mineola, Floral Park, New Hyde Park, Stewart Manor, Westbury, South Floral Park, Bellerose) recently all signed on to a letter that was sent to Nassau County Village Officials Association President Barbara Donno objecting to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s resubmitting of the Mainline Third Track Project. Being as this was first proposed roughly a decade ago and wound up eventually being derailed by public opposition, don’t be surprised if the Third Track Project Part II winds up meeting a similar fate within the next 50 days or so that Cuomo has to try and make this a done deal.
