What is New Hyde Park Memorial High School’s best kept secret? It’s the Dad’s Club, a whole bunch of caring dad’s whose only focus is on the benefit of the students at the high school. They raise money for the sole purpose to give it back to the student population for scholarships and to supplement funding for events and programs such as the Breast Cancer Walk and Yearbook Club. On Monday, July 25, the club will be hosting a golf outing at North Shore Towers Country Club.
I have been a member of this wonderful organization for over nine years. Throughout those years I have seen this club just continue to evolve. It was once thought they were just about sports because they mostly sold refreshments from a concession stand which has been know as the Shack. This was done during sporting events because that was the only opportunity they had at the time to do fund raising. So everyone thought they were only supporting sports. However throughout the years all the past presidents have come up with more creative ways to raise money. Now not only do they continue to sell refreshments at the Shack which is much more frequent, you can see them at many other events such as plays and concerts, they even sell clothing promoting New Hyde Park Memorial.
When the Dad’s Club is at these events the kids love it because they know they can purchase some food or a cold drink and know the proceeds are all going back to them, and we hear the fries are a big hit. Sal Balducci, the exiting president, has set a new level for this benevolent organization. He has brought everyone together through collaboration to form a great club. Balducci is a great leader because he realizes like all of us, the team members is what makes an organization. And what a club we have become. All members are always willing to lend a helping hand for a good cause. Every year we continue to increase our proceeds which enables us to give more back. This year the Dad’s Club gave $8,400 for 28 scholarships. Come this fall if you have never been a part of this caring club or if your child is entering the high school, come down and see what it’s all about.
