Thursday, Aug. 4

Creative Art
Register online for this two-part class being held the Thursdays of Aug. 4 and 11 at 4 p.m. and geared for youth ages 5-8. Students will create a colorful, painted, paper fish artwork. Material fee: $4.

Friday, Aug. 5

Jump for Joy
Toddlers ages 1½-4 will get a chance to “Jump for Joy” as they play along to popular songs. Register online for this three-part class being held the Fridays of Aug. 5, 12 and 26 at 10 a.m.

Sit And Sew Needlework Group
The library’s Sit and Sew Needlework Group is for anyone who knits, crochets, quilts, embroiders or cross-stiches. Needlework artists of all skill levels are invited to socialize, gain experience, learn and share techniques while working on their own projects. Bring your own supplies to work on your project. All are welcome. No registration is required.

Saturday, Aug. 6

Defensive Driving
The Empire Safety Council will hold a six-hour class from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reduce points and insurance. Fee is a $27 check or money order made payable to the Empire Safety Council. Class limit: 40. Register at Reference Desk.

Monday, Aug. 8

Monday Movie
At 2 p.m., the library will screen Concussion, starring Will Smith. Rated PG-13, 123 minutes. While conducting an autopsy on former NFL football player Mike Webster (David Morse), forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu (Smith) discovers neurological deterioration that is similar to Alzheimer’s disease.

Tuesday, Aug. 9

Preschool Storycraft
Register online for this three-class series taking place on the Tuesdays of Aug. 9, 16 and 23 at 11 a.m. For ages 3-5. Some stories and a simple craft.

The Great One
At 1 p.m., the library presents “Jackie Gleason: A TV Pioneer.” Gleason is most remembered for his comedy, both on television and in the movies. Reruns of his popular The Honeymooners series still are shown on TV. His film career included the wildly popular Smokey and the Bandit series as well as The Hustler, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. This lecture, presented by Ira Epstein, will explore his comedic talents with emphasis upon his Honeymooner series. No registration required.

Romero Britto
The library’s Artist of the Month is Romero Britto. From 7:15 to 8:30 p.m., explore the artwork of this no-pop painter with Tina Geller. Then create a colorful and happy work in his style. Register online for this class, limited to 20 teens.

Friday, Aug. 10

Writing Club
The Hicksville Public Library Writing Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. and offers a writing lesson, an in-class writing prompt, and the opportunity to read and critique both it and any longer pieces penned at home. Those with all levels of experience, including beginners, and interests in all genres are welcome.
