Gerard Terry, a Roslyn Heights resident and former Town of North Hempstead Democratic Party leader, recently was indicted on eight tax fraud charges by a grand jury.
The indictment was handed down last week at the State Supreme Court in Mineola. According to the Nassau County District Attorney’s (NCDA) office, Terry has been charged for not filing state income tax returns and failing to pay New York state personal income taxes for 2010 and 2015. He was also charged with additional crimes related to tax years 2013, 2014 and 2015, namely offering false instrument for filing taxes.
Terry has yet to be sentenced. The tax fraud conviction could result in a sentence of anywhere from 27 months to seven years in prison. When he was arraigned last summer, the district attorney’s office said that Terry had earned hundreds of thousands of dollars from local government contracts. Published reports stated that Terry had compiled nearly $1.4 million federal and state tax debt.
“This defendant has made hundreds of thousands of dollars from taxpayer-funded government contracts,” District Attorney Madeline Singas said. “Yet despite his public commitment to file and pay required taxes, he has allegedly continued to shirk his state tax obligations.”
