A large contingency of Mineola Leisure Club members attended Fun Day Monday events at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington. Seniors participated in a variety of activities that included games, music, dancing, entertainment, fitness and a health fair. Some club members simply gathered together in groups to enjoy each other’s company and pursue a day of complete enjoyment.
Seniors also enjoyed a show-stopping musical program from Sweet Lorraine. Subsequent weeks found Jerry Costanzo and his 10-piece band jazzing it up and club members “Shaking It Out” with DJ Kev and “Rocking The Beach” with The Vic Vincent Group. As part of a different musical theme, the talented Aloha Dancers swayed rhythmically to the beautiful strain of Hawaiian songs. To complete this day’s entertainment, another performer brought the group back to the South Pacific with his rendition of “Blue Hawaii,” among other Elvis Presley hits. At a later date, Vincent Rhodes invited the beachgoers to kick up their heels with his musical accompaniment. Then there was a terrific show put on by Stan and Edie. Last, but certainly not least, was the final appearance of a slew of talented performers when the the Banjo Rascals wrapped up the season with Dixieland Swing.
From 10 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. the activity schedule was busy and varied and appealed to the many different interests of club members. One could participate in line dancing, Zumba, fitness activities, Mahjong, mindfulness coloring and Tai Chi. A new activity that required advance registration was a guided Hempstead Harbor Trail Walk, where the seniors learned about the rich history and great value of this beautiful shoreline. On occasion, those present were also able to do some food shopping when a farmer’s market rolled into the park and offered a plethora of fresh farm produce. For those who eschewed the scheduled programs and chose to make their own fun, seniors gathered into groups around tables to picnic and play pinochle, poker, rummy cubes and Mahjong.
