Local seniors were recently treated to lunch, music and giveaways, during the Village of Mineola’s 16th annual Senior Appreciation Day.
Mayor Scott Strauss started the luncheon by donating $2,500 each to the Golden Age Club, Leisure Club and Mineola chapter of the AARP. Strauss noted that the groups do a wonderful job in keeping the senior population of Mineola actively engaged in community affairs.
“We have a huge senior population, and they’re a great population too,” Strauss said. “The Golden Age Club, Leisure Club and AARP are very vital. They have programs for our seniors and it keeps them in engaged, and we love having people engaged in our community.”
Local businesses donated the food and worked with the recreation department to bring in more than 100 seniors, who enjoyed a catered lunch, lively music and catching up with friends. Many also put in their names for raffle prizes.
“Anything Mineola runs is very good, and it’s great to see the seniors smile and be happy,” said Mary Duffy, vice president of the Golden Age Club. “I want to thank Mineola. It’s the best town on Long Island.”
