The Great Neck Public Schools Board of Education approved the partial school tax exemptions for qualified residents in five groups—senior citizens with limited income, persons with disabilities and limited income, volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers, veterans and Gold Star parents—at its Dec. 12 meeting.
Exemptions apply to the 2016 tax year, and applications for all partial tax exemptions are due before the taxable status date of Jan. 1, 2017.
The board also approved a new partial school tax exemption for qualified Cold War veterans that will apply to the 2017 tax year.
Exemption requirements and qualification guidelines are explained on application forms, which are available in person from the Nassau County Department of Assessment during weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 240 Old Country Rd in Mineola. Applications may also be requested by phone at 516-571-1500 or downloaded at www.nassaucountyny.gov/3575/exemption-forms and www.nassaucountyny.gov/3306/veterans-real-property-tax-exemptions.
The board has provided relief to seniors since 1970, to persons with disabilities and limited income since 1984, to volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers since 2005, and to veterans and Gold Star parents (parents of a child who died in the line of duty while serving in the U.S. armed forces during a period of war) since 2014.
