Plainview Student Wins Brain Bee Competition
The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District recently recognized the accomplishments of Safia Mirza, a junior at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School, who won first place in the annual Long Island Brain Bee Competition. The competition, held at Hofstra University’s Northwell Medical School, exposes high school students to neurology and encourage students to pursue careers in fields related to science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). Her victory resulted in her qualifying for the National Brain Bee Championship at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.
Mirza placed first out of 31 high school students from throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. The participating students were challenged in three rounds to test their understanding of neuroscience: a live question and answer session; a written test; laboratory demonstrations; and identifying anatomical structures and functions on a human brain. Mirza currently excels in JFK High School’s advanced placement psychology class.
The Plainview Old-Bethpage School District emphasizes the importance of STEAM education, offering several advanced placement and comprehensive classroom opportunities to provide students with the resources to succeed both in the classroom and beyond.
