After two candidates withdrew as candidates for Board of Education trustee, the Great Neck Public Schools were required, by law, to reopen the candidate petition period until May 9 for the Tuesday, May 16, election.
“This stopped the clock for sending out absentee ballots until May 10,” said Jessica Vega, public relations coordinator for Great Neck Public Schools. “To date, no additional candidates have come forward.”
Residents heading off on vacation who want to vote for Board of Education trustee candidates, the budget and the bond have expressed concern about receiving and returning their ballots in a timely manner.
According to Vega, anyone who has requested an absentee ballot who will not be at their Great Neck address when ballots are mailed on May 10, may call the district clerk now at 516-441-4020 and give the address they will be at as of May 10. The district clerk will mail the ballot to any vacation address in the U.S.
In order for the completed, signed absentee ballot to be received by the district clerk by 5 p.m. on May 16, the voter may need to return the absentee ballot by overnight mail.
Since absentee ballots are legal, confidential documents, they cannot be faxed or emailed. They must be mailed via the U.S. Postal Service in sealed envelopes both by the school district and by the voter.
On May 16, registered voters who live north of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) may vote at Baker School, 69 Baker Hill Rd. Those who live south of the LIRR may vote at South High School, 341 Lakeville Rd.
