A California man was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years to life in prison for fatally shooting his estranged wife’s 34-year-old boyfriend in Valley Stream two years ago.

Deon Ewers, 51, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., was convicted of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon at Nassau County court in March.

“This defendant flew across the country, senselessly murdered an innocent man in a jealous rage, and fled the scene,” Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said.

Prosecutors said Ewers visited his ex-wife’s home to surprise her and his son, but he instead confronted Majid Morris in an upstairs bedroom, where Ewers gunned the victim down shortly before 7 a.m. Nov. 6, 2015.

The gunman fled the scene, his son called 911 and the victim was pronounced dead about an hour later at South Franklin Hospital.

The shooter ditched the gun behind a commercial establishment and then went to a laundromat to wash his clothes. Nassau police arrested him in Oceanside the following day.
