North High’s Tri-M Chapter 2605 is the winner of the National Association for Music Education (NAME) 2016–17 Tri-M Chapter of the Year, Senior Division.
“The students involved with Tri-M consistently show a commitment to their school music programs and to their communities,” said Kristen Rencher, NAME director of member and student programs. “Chapters like yours continue to set an example of both academic and musical excellence. Thank you for your chapter’s commitment to the Tri-M Music Honor Society!”
As this year’s winner, North High’s Tri-M will receive a $1,000 check, plaque and certificate. The award is to be used to fund a musically enriching activity or music program scholarship.
Joseph Rutkowski, North High instrumental music director, said that the school’s Tri-M chapter plans to continue projects such as communication and sharing of music through Skype to show support for the Afghanistan National Institute of Music; fundraising to benefit needy Long Island families; performing at a local children’s hospital and assisted-living facilities; hosting NYSSMA festivals; and presenting before-school Lobby Concerts.
“This is what Tri-M is all about,” Rutkowski said. “It’s the music that continues to connect us all.”
