Plainview athletes Shari Klarfeld, Danielle Brenner, Chris Schiavone and David Drebsky each were presented with an award at the Greater Long Island Running Club’s Awards Night on Dec. 19. The awards night was held in the auditorium of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library in front of a near capacity audience.
Klarfeld earned the club’s overall female championship award for the second year in a row. The 36-year-old mother of three is a fixture at local road races and wins more then her fair share of them—most recently the Nov. 12 Blue Ribbon 5K Run for Prostate Cancer held at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration. She brought her oldest son Ari along for the evening.
Brenner, 13, one of the up-and-coming younger members of the Long Island running community, shared the female 14-and-under age group championship award with Marissa McDougall of Ronkonkoma. Christian Schiavone, a 17-year-old track team stalwart at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School, scored with the men’s championship in the 15-19 age group.
Drebsky has spent a good part of 2017 competing in ultra-marathons all over the country, but he still found the time to compete in a sufficient number of GLIRC events to win a tight race for the championship in the men’s 35-39 age group.
“We are thrilled with the accomplishments of all our club members over the year 2017 and this evening presented a special opportunity to recognize ‘the best of the best,’” said running club president Mike Polansky. “2017 was a great year for running on Long Island and we look for 2018 to be even better.”
