The Art Guild celebrates Earth Day in honor of Myra Fox
The Art Guild invites all artists to enter “Going Green, A Juried Competition and Exhibition.” All artists 18 years and older (high school students ages 14-18 years may enter in the student category) are invited to submit up to three works for consideration. The deadline for submissions is midnight, Friday, March 9. A prospectus can be downloaded at www.TheArtGuild.org.
The exhibit will be on view from March 31 to April 29. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment. An Artists’ Reception and Awards Ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. This exhibit honors the late Myra Fox, a beloved member of The Art Guild, and celebrates Earth Day. A committed environmentalist, Fox was happiest when her hands were dirty—either with paint or in her garden. Artists are invited to repurpose, recycle or create new artwork to celebrate the beauty of the world around us and honor the spirit of Fox, who was so committed to healing our earth.
The juror-of-awards for this exhibit is Martha Tarlow, owner of the Roslyn Village Gallery. Tarlow was born in Manhattan and grew up on the lower East Side where her parents encouraged an appreciation of the arts and nurtured her love of painting. Tarlow opened the Roslyn Village Gallery in 2016 and featured a large exhibit of Fox’s work in 2017.
Of her own art Tarlow says, “I believe my paintings speak on a level that makes one feel good. My art is peaceful, inspiring in me a feeling of serenity. If the content is sincere, it will be noticed. To me, painting is like breathing, and I often remind myself how lucky I am to be a painter. I don’t believe artistic skill is a natural endowment…you are born with a gift, but the determining factor for an artist is motivation and hard work. It takes intelligence, sensitivity, good teaching and luck to develop artistically.” Her work is in many private collections.
The Art Guild offers classes for children, high school students and adults throughout the year. Spring classes for children and adults will be open for registration shortly, including: Fundamentals of Drawing with Greg Follender, Get Sharp: Drawing with Stephanie Navon-Jacobson, Portrait Painting with Leeanna Chipana, Watercolor with Eileen Neville, and Children’s classes for ages 5-7 and 8-12. A wide range of workshops are now registering for 2018 including: Simple & Sophisticated Relief Printmaking with Stephanie Navon-Jacobson, March 10-11; Colored Pencil with Kristy Kutch, April 22-24; One-Day Cellphone Photography Workshop with Howard Rose, April 28; Painting from Life with Max Ginsburg, May 4-6 plus a demo on May 3 (both are sold out, but a waiting list is being taken); Silkscreen Monoprint with Stephanie Navon-Jacobson, June 23-24; The Still Life in Oil with Robert Johnson, July 13-15; Embrace the Practice Daily Painting Workshop with Lisa Daria Kennedy, Aug. 4-5 and Expressive Pastels with Karen Margulis, Oct. 26-28.
The Art Guild of Port Washington, Inc., is a nonprofit organization providing encouragement, education and a forum for the appreciation of the visual arts. The Art Guild strives to offer residents from local and neighboring communities an avenue to broaden their creative pursuits.
