Discovering The Vintage Grape

WineFeatureB 9ecb15Serving wine is the popular choice for most dinner parties, but how much do you know about wines? Most people have the basic knowledge of pairing white with fish or chicken and red with meat, but how do you know what to choose? Sands Point Conservancy will be holding a series of lectures to aid in your education of the vintage grape.

What better place to learn about wines than the Gold Coast Mansion Hempstead House. Discover the world of wine in a new eight-week course, led by wine expert Mike Douglass of Post Wine & Spirits. Whether you are knowledgeable about wines and wine production, or new to the subject, this comprehensive program will enrich your appreciation of wine, and give you the necessary expertise to choose fine wine at home, in restaurants, and when traveling.

Wine tasting is the sensory examination and evaluation of wine. Can you judge a wine by the appearance, aroma, the in-mouth sensation and the finish of the wine which defines its complexity and character, potential and possible faults?

Each session covers the wines of one or more regions around the world. Douglass will share their histories, with fascinating stories about the pioneers and personalities involved. The series will delve into the important grape varieties of each region—what makes them unique and desirable—and will identify key vineyards and wineries as well as best values and current vintage reports. Participants will sample a cross section of the region, approximately eight different wines per class. Notable wine experts will join as guest speakers.

The courses include: The Art of Wine-Making, Sparkling Wine and Champagne of Long Island; California, Oregon and Washington Wines; Italian Wines; Wines from Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa; French Wines including Burgundy, Beaujolais and Chablis; Wines from Spain, Portugal, Germany and Greece; Bordeaux from France; Wines from Rhone, Southern France, Loire and Alsace.

The courses run from Monday, April 9 to Wednesday, May 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. Register online at www.sandspointpreserveconservancy.org/events/a-study-in-wine or call 516-304-5076.
