The Church of St. Mary’s CYO team, coached by Sean Egan, John Hogan, and Tony Lam are the 2018 CYO Champions for fifth grade.

During the season, the team steadily perfected their plays, improving as a team with each game and finishing in second place in their division with a record of seven wins and three losses. The team then won three playoff games, first against Infant Jesus of Port Jefferson, next against St. Bernard’s of Levittown, and finally against St. Peter’s of Port Washington to ensure them a place in the championship game.

The championship game against St. Elizabeth’s of Melville on March 24 was close from the start with both teams playing aggressively. The teams traded baskets and both fought hard for rebounds and steals. It was in the fourth quarter where St. Mary’s solid offense and consistent defense buoyed them to a larger lead. Even with the lead, the St. Mary’s boys never let up, pressuring on both sides of the court and leading them to a 26-18 victory. Way to go boys!
