Recently Troop 71 hit the steep and rocky trails of Harriman State Park for an overnight camping trip. This wasn’t just any camping trip though, this was also a shakedown trip for the crew attending Philmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America’s premier High Adventure base in New Mexico, this summer.
The group started at Bear Mountain Inn, then hiked to Popoloken Creek/Gorge, past Queensboro Lake, stopping along the way for lunch and to visit interesting sites such as a military memorial, to Turkey Hill Lake where they made camp.
The grueling five-mile trek up steep hills, which some described as more like cliffs, made everyone tired and ready for a delicious foil broil dinner followed by Jambalaya. After a good night sleep the group hiked out with all their gear and memories.
