Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District residents voted to approve the $57,607,530 budget for the 2018-19 school year in a vote of 754 to 275. In the board of trustee election, Nancy Castrogiovanni (632) and Maryann Santos (622) defeated Ann Marie Longo. Current trustee Michael Castellano did not seek reelection.
Several other propositions passed, including one to permit spending $1,135,000 from the capital reserve for a playground, locker room, asphalt and bathroom improvements and a field house; and spending up to $900,000 from the reserve for air conditioning in the high school auditorium. Residents also voted to establish a technology capital reserve fund, adding $1 million per year for 10 years.
“On behalf of the Board of Education and administration of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District, I extend my heartfelt thanks to our registered voters for approving the 2018-19 school budget. Thanks to your continued support, the budget passed by a vote of 756 to 275,” said Superintendent Dr. Laura Seinfeld. “Your affirmation is the key to success for our students and our district as a whole. Your support enables us to maintain our instructional programs that are so vital to our students’ growth while integrating new initiatives that will enrich our curriculum and contribute to our students’ success.
“Your support also acknowledges our efforts to minimize the burden on our taxpayers as we put forth a tax levy increase that fell way below our tax levy limit under the New York State tax cap,” Seinfeld said. “Thanks to you, we can move forward knowing that our students will have the tools necessary to make new strides in academics, athletics and in the arts, and continue our legacy of excellence in education.”
Seindfeld extended congratulations to Castrogiovanni and Santos, wishing them “a productive and rewarding term as we work together for the benefit of all students of our cherished district.”
The Locust Valley Central School District community approved the $85,612,108 budget in a vote of 1,008 to 544, and also passed three additional propositions: Expenditure from Capital Reserves, Creation of Capital Reserve Fund and the Locust Valley Library Budget. In the trustee election, Brian Nolan and Jennifer Maselli were elected to the board of education for three-year terms. Margaret Marchand was elected to the board of education for a one-year term to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of trustee Lissa Harris earlier this school year.
